I would suggest using a #2 Sport weight yarn so that you get a reasonable sized mug rug.

Yarn Usage:
Col A - 2 x balls - Catania Colors
Col B - 2 x balls - Catania Solids
with a 2.5mm hook.
I used a 2.0mm hook for the borders
