Overlay Mosaic Crochet Pattern For A Pillow
Introducing the Soothing Beams Pillow Pattern, a delightful creation born from the holiday spirit and a wonderful partnership with HOBBII yarns. As part of this festive collaboration, the Soothing Beams Pillow came to life, alongside The Liko Pillow Pattern, available in my stores. Although initially designed for Christmas, this versatile pattern can transcend seasons and occasions with a simple change of colors.
Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, this pattern is presented in US terms and showcases the captivating Overlay Mosaic Technique. In this technique, the intricate design unfolds on the right side (RS) of your work, with each round featuring a single color. The interplay of two colors, C1 and C2, alternates in every round, resulting in a mesmerizing mosaic effect.
Within the pattern, you'll encounter two key stitch types:
1. BLSCS (Back Loop Single Crochets): These are the empty blocks on the chart and are always worked in the back loop only (referred to as SC without specifying BL). When a normal SC is required, the instructions and chart will clearly indicate so.
2. FLDCS (Front Loop Drop Crochets): These 'X' blocks on the chart represent 'drop-down stitches,' crafted in stitches from the corresponding color round (2nd round below) and worked through the front loop only (referred to as DC without specifying FL).
Each mosaic round concludes with a strategic slip stitch (SS) made with the next round's color in the back loop of the first stitch. This clever technique ensures a seamless transition to the next color, leaving the previous color ready for future use without the need to cut it.
Please note that the beginning chain (CH1) of each round does not count as a stitch.
For this project, I used 100% merino wool, but you are free to select the yarn that best suits your creative vision.
To make your crocheting experience even more delightful, a helpful chart accompanies the pattern. Colored squares within the chart reveal the motif, while empty squares represent BLSCS (SCs), and 'X' squares depict FLDCS (DCs) made two rounds below. To use the chart efficiently, print the chart pages in two horizontal lines: the first from 1.1 to 1.4 and the second from 2.1 to 2.4. Cut and attach them to form the complete chart.
The final measurements of the pillow should be approximately 48x46 cm when you've used the recommended hook size and yarn type. For your convenience, a printable version is also included.
Closure preference is a matter of personal choice; you can opt for a row of slip stitches (SS), a zipper, or buttons. The pillowcase is worked from the bottom up in joined rounds, and the chart and instructions are thoughtfully explained for both Front and Back parts. To enhance your crocheting experience, I recommend placing a stitch marker each time you reach the last stitch of the Front or Back.
Here's a tip: when a round that begins with a DC ends with a DC, for the last DC, the first 'insert hook, yarn over' should be 'insert hook in the stitch, insert hook in the stitch where the first DC was made, yarn over....'. This simple adjustment ensures a neater finish along the sides.
Embrace the charm of the Soothing Beams Pillow Pattern, and infuse your creative spirit into every stitch. I can't wait to see the magnificent pillow creations you craft using this pattern. Happy crocheting!
