An Inset Mosaic Crochet Pattern For A Triangular Shawl
Thank you for choosing this pattern and for your support on my creative journey!
Introducing the Bernice Shawl Crochet Pattern, inspired by the remarkable American photographer Bernice Abbott, known for her iconic New York City photographs. This pattern takes its name from her artistry, aiming to capture the essence of her work in the world of crochet.
Crafted with passion, this pattern is written in US terms and employs the mesmerizing Inset Mosaic Technique. Here, rows are thoughtfully worked in pairs, with color changes introduced every two rows. This unique approach minimizes the number of ends to weave in, making the process as enjoyable as the final creation.
Within each pair of rows, you'll work with a single color. On the wrong side (WS) rows, stitches are handled in a specific manner: one single crochet (SC) in each SC or double crochet (DC) and a 2-chain (2CH) stitch over every 2CH space.
Between pairs of rows, there's no need to cut the yarn unless explicitly directed. You'll seamlessly transition to the new color as required for each color change. The shawl takes shape as you work flat in rows, beginning from the bottom and moving upwards. Keep in mind that "CH 2, skip the next ST" counts as one stitch, and the beginning CH1 of each row doesn't count as a stitch.
For this project, I used a wool/acrylic mixed yarn, but feel free to select the yarn that resonates with your creative vision. To assist you in following the intricate design, I've included a helpful chart. Each colored square within the chart represents a motif, and inside each square, you'll find the specific stitch you need to use.
The final measurements of the shawl should be approximately 130x145x200 cm if you've used the recommended hook size and type of yarn. Additionally, you'll find a printable version to enhance your crafting experience.
What sets this pattern apart is a creative twist inspired by Mijo Crochet's XY DUO SHAWL (thank you for the inspiration!). You'll leave all unused colors to be picked up again after two rows, significantly reducing the need to weave in ends. At the end of every second row in your SECTION 'A' (i.e., the wrong side), you'll CH4 with the color you're not using and place a stitch marker to hold it. The first time, you'll attach your new color with a slip stitch and proceed with the next two rows. Then CH4 again with this color and leave it, pick up the previous one, joining the last CH of your CH4 to the last worked stitch, and so on. You'll only need to cut and weave in ends between sections. Neat, right?
A curious fact about this pattern is that it provides an intuitive way to keep track of the number of stitches you're making. The row number you're on corresponds to the number of stitches on that row.
Embrace the artistry of Bernice Abbott and infuse her creative spirit into your crochet journey with this unique mosaic pattern. I'm excited to see the beautiful creations you craft using this pattern. Happy crocheting!
